Number of virus cases in Africa tops 992,700

Death toll exceeds 21,600, recoveries reach 673,757 says Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AA) - The total number of coronavirus cases in Africa has climbed to 992,710, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.

The death toll in the continent rose to 21,617, with a total of 673,757 recoveries.

With 529,900 cases, South Africa has registered more than half of the total number of cases in the continent

Meanwhile, the government of Botswana has banned the sale of alcohol and suspended all liquor licenses, until further notice.

A gazette notice said the ban is based on evidence that consumption of alcohol increases the risk posed by the virus due to its negative effects on adherence to COVID-19 protocols.
