Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn is coming out of retirement to ski for the US Ski Team in the 2024-25 season, the team confirmed Thursday.
"U.S. Ski & Snowboard is excited to announce that alpine great Lindsey Vonn will rejoin the Stifel U.S. Ski Team," it said in a statement.
"Getting back to skiing without pain has been an incredible journey," said Vonn, who is 40. "I am looking forward to being back with the Stifel U.S. Ski Team and to continue to share my knowledge of the sport with these incredible women.”
The US Ski Team said Vonn decided to return to racing after she underwent “successful knee surgery" earlier in 2024, and she has been training to "test her knee" in recent months.
She suffered numerous injuries during her career, including torn knee ligaments, meniscus, fractured tibia, wrist, thumb, pinkie and ankle, forcing her retirement in 2019.
Vonn won gold in the downhill competition at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. She also won a Super-G bronze at the same Olympics.
She also had an Olympic bronze medal in a downhill race at Pyeongchang 2018.
The next Winter Olympics will be in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in February 2026.
