ROME (AA) - Italian authorities have taken legal and administrative action against 25 prison officers on Wednesday following allegations of torture and abuse at the Pietro Cerulli prison in Trapani, according to media reports.
Rainews24 said the case has led to the house arrest of 11 officers and the suspension of 14 others from their public duties.
The investigation, which dates to 2021, involves 46 individuals and centers on claims that officers abused their authority to mistreat inmates.
The abuse reportedly took place in areas of the prison not monitored by security cameras.
The allegations include charges of torture and complicity in criminal acts.
It is the latest in a string of prison abuse scandals in Italy.
In April, 13 officers were implicated in the mistreatment of juvenile inmates at a Milan correctional facility.
That was after 10 officers were investigated on March for assaulting two inmates in Foggia.
And reports surfaced in February of a Tunisian inmate being tortured by officers in Reggio Emilia.
