Pro-democracy groups in Eswatini deliver petition to US embassy urging end to Israel-Palestine war

MANZINI, Eswatini (AA) - Members of pro-democracy groups and civil society in Eswatini staged a protest outside the US embassy on Wednesday calling for an end to Israel’s war against Palestinians.

“We call upon the United States and its morally obligated citizens to condemn the Israeli aggression in Gaza and end the hostilities that perpetrated the humanitarian catastrophe that is taking place,” said Thamie Hlatshwayo, one of the organizers.

He said that as friends of Palestine, they recognize Washington’s interest in a humanitarian pause in Gaza, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and support for Israel’s right to self-defense.

“But we call for an immediate cease-fire and humanitarian truce, prosecution by the International Criminal Court of all those that have committed war crimes in Gaza, the immediate restoration of healthcare facilities and the protection of patients. Also, the establishment of the State of Palestine with sovereign territory based on United Nations resolutions,” said Hlatshwayo.

Mphandlana Shongwe, a political activist, said the authorities in Eswatini are equally guilty like Israel of violating human rights.

“Eswatini’s government must cut ties with Israel. The fact is, not all ordinary Swazi citizens benefit from the relationship, but it is only the royal regime that benefits. The guns they use in killing us are bought in Israel, and all the drones they use for surveillance too. Even in the United Nations, Swaziland votes in line with US interests, which are in favor of Israel,” he said.

He noted that solidarity with Palestine will also help international solidarity in favor of pro-democracy Swazis who are trapped under the draconian monarchial hegemony.

“If we want international solidarity, we must also show solidarity with Palestine and other people who are victims of war in other regions,” he said.

Eswatini has close diplomatic ties with Israel. The kingdom receives security and surveillance training and security devices from the country.
