Ronaldo to miss Liverpool match after death of newborn son

ANKARA (AA) - Manchester United's Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will not play against Liverpool on Tuesday, following the death of his newborn son.

"Family is more important than everything and Ronaldo is supporting his loved ones at this immensely difficult time. As such, we can confirm that he will not feature in the match against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening and we underline the family's request for privacy," Manchester United said in a statement.

"Cristiano, we are all thinking of you and sending strength to the family," the club added.

In addition to Manchester United, Ronaldo's former clubs Real Madrid and Juventus have also offered condolences.

"It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel," Ronaldo, 37, had said on Instagram on Monday.

"Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness," he said.

Ronaldo, who is a father of five after the birth of his daughter, also said they are devastated and asked for some privacy at this difficult time.

Fifth-place Manchester United will visit title contenders Liverpool on Tuesday evening.

Liverpool have 73 points in 31 matches to pursue leaders Manchester City, who have 74 points. Manchester United have bagged 54 points in 32 games.
