Reshuffle sees sidelining of several Cabinet members critical of overspending, corruption

By Hassan Isilow

JOHANNESBURG (AA) - South African President Jacob Zuma replaced several high-profile ministers in a cabinet reshuffle announced Friday, leading to a five-percent drop in the country’s currency against the dollar.

In a statement, Zuma said he had decided to make changes to the National Executive in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

“The changes bring some younger members of parliament and women into the National Executive in order to benefit from their energy, experience and expertise,” he said.

Replaced ministers include Pravin Gordhan who held the finance portfolio, his deputy Mcebisi Jonas plus Public Service and Administration Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi.

Others are Transport Minister Dipuo Peters, Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom and Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson.

Experts say some of those dismissed had been performing well but were critical of Zuma, and opposed to growing corruption in government.

Last year, Hanekom moved a motion of no confidence against Zuma during a meeting of the ruling African National Congress.

Earlier this week, Zuma ordered Gordhan to return home from a trip to the U.K., triggering rumors of a reshuffle.

Gordhan, who had been seen as a stabilizing factor in the Treasury, was appointed in December 2015 after Zuma fired two finance ministers in less than a week, sparking a sell-off of South African assets.

He has now been replaced by former Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba, who has no experience at the Treasury.

Gordhan -- who first served as finance minister between 2009 and 2014 -- and Jonas were opposed to excessive spending and corruption in government.
