Sadio Mane, Senegal's key factor in first ever journey to AFCON title

ANKARA (AA) - Sadio Mane spearheaded Senegal to their first Africa Cup of Nations trophy with a stunning performance in the tournament held in Cameroon.

Having played a key role in Senegal cruising to the title, Mane has been named Africa Cup of Nations player of the tournament with three goals and two assists.

Despite missing the penalty in the seventh minute of the final, Mane scored the winning penalty in shootout in Senegal's 4-2 win on penalties against Egypt after the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

Senegalese hero called the final day as "the best day of his life," said about the AFCON trophy "the best trophy of his life."

"I won the Champions League and some [other] trophies but this is the special one for me. This is more important for me.

"I am happy for myself, my people and all of my family."

Mane scored 26 goals in 80 appearances for his nation so far.

He was unlucky in 2017 Africa Cup of Nations held in Gabon when he missed the decisive penalty in shootout in the quarter finals against Cameroon.

Following the defeat, Senegal fans left angry and attacked his house as Mane requested that to be put under armed guard by police 24 hours a day.

Mane was named African Footballer of the Year for the first time in his career in 2019.

He brought this award to his country 17 years after his compatriot El Hadji Diouf won it for twice in 2001 and 2002.

Having started his senior career at Metz, Mane played for Red Bull Salzburg between 2012 and 2014.

He then joined Southampton where he recorded an impressive form for two season before completing his move to Liverpool in 2016 for a fee of $46 million (€40 million).

Mane continued his improvement at top level and has been always crucial part of Jurgen Klopp's side with the contribution to major trophies.

He helped Liverpool win the 2019 UEFA Champions League, 2019 FIFA Club World Cup and 2020 Premier League as he registered 107 goals and 44 assists for the Reds so far.

The 29-year old player grew up in poverty like many African players and does not hesitate to spend his money on charity.

Having a school built in the village where he was born, Mane also provided financial support to his compatriot with many projects including building mosques and hospitals.
