Sergio Ramos signs 1-year contract with Mexican club Monterrey

ISTANBUL (AA) - Former Real Madrid and Spain defender Sergio Ramos Thursday signed a one-year contract with Mexican side Monterrey.

"Sergio’s arrival at Monterrey is an unprecedented milestone in the Club’s history, given his career, achievements, and worldwide recognition," Monterrey said in a statement.

"The footballer is considered one of the greatest central defenders in the history of world football."

Ramos was a regular at Real Madrid from 2005 to 2021, helping the team win five Spanish La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions League titles, and three UEFA Super Cup trophies.

The Spanish defender scored 101 goals in 671 appearances for Real Madrid.

One of the best defenders of his generation, Ramos helped Paris Saint Germain win back-to-back French Ligue 1 titles in 2022 and 2023.

He was one of the integral parts of the Spanish national team as Ramos helped them win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back EURO titles in 2008 and 2012.

Ramos racked up 180 international caps to score 23 goals for Spain.

The 38-year-old won UEFA’s Best Defender award in 2017, was named to the UEFA Team of the Year eight times and was nominated for the Ballon d'Or six times.
