KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) - Several people were killed and many injured after violence broke out Sunday during the final match of a local football tournament at a stadium in southeastern Guinea, local media reported.

Players of the Labe football team disputed a goal scored by the rival Nzerekore team, leading to clashes between the fans of the opposing teams at a stadium in Guinea’s second largest city, Nzerekore, about 570 kilometers (354 miles) from the capital Conakry, the Mediaguinee news portal reported.

According to the report, refereeing decisions that saw two Labe players receive red cards followed by a penalty against the same team triggered the violence.

“Fighting broke out after the team’s supporters threw stones onto the pitch. Security intervened with tear gas, and suddenly the stadium was invaded, causing chaos and clashes,” it said.

There has been no official communication so far from the government. But reports said around 20 people were killed, including teenagers, as fans fled towards the exit amid teargas.

“We have already learned of several cases of deaths, including minors. At the regional hospital, several wounded have been admitted and are undergoing treatment. Some of the injured are in very serious condition,” local media said, citing a news correspondent.

It was the final match of a tournament sponsored by Guinea’s President Gen. Mamady Doumbouya.
