South Africa reports 1,985 new COVID-19 cases

Country has highest number of infections on continent

JOHANNESBURG (AA) - South Africa reported 1,985 new coronavirus cases in a 24-hour period, bringing the total number of infections to 627,041, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced late Monday.
Mkhize said 121 COVID-19 related deaths were also recorded, taking the total number of fatalities to 14,149.
The country’s top doctor said 540,923 patients have recovered from the virus, which translates to a recovery rate of 86%.
“The total number of tests conducted to date is 3.6 million, with 18,849 new tests conducted since the last report on Sunday,” Mkhize said.
South Africa has the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the continent and the fifth highest number globally.

The total number of people infected with the novel coronavirus in Africa exceeded 1.2 million Monday, according the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
The center said 29,589 people have died from COVID-19-related deaths in Africa, while 975,643 patients have recovered from the virus.
