After 18 years away, Spanish central defender Sergio Ramos on Monday returned to his boyhood club Sevilla.

"Sevilla FC have reached an agreement for the signing of Sergio Ramos," the Spanish La Liga club said in a statement.

Sevilla confirmed that former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) player Ramos, who was a free agent, passed his medical exam to sign a one-year contract.

Ramos, 37, said he is "looking forward to wearing the Sevilla crest again, stepping out at the Sanchez-Pizjuan (Sevilla's stadium), and seeing you all again."

The experienced defender added that it was a "debt" owed to himself and his family, and he will do his best for Sevilla.

Sevilla product Ramos played 49 matches before his sensational move to Real Madrid in 2005.

A Real Madrid regular in 2005-2021, Ramos helped it win five Spanish La Liga and four UEFA Champions League titles and three UEFA Super Cup trophies.

He scored 101 goals in 671 appearances for Real Madrid.

One of the best defenders of his generation, Ramos helped PSG win back-to-back French Ligue 1 titles in 2022 and 2023.

He was one of the integral parts of the Spanish national team as Ramos helped them win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back European (EURO) titles in 2008 and 2012.

Real Madrid's ex-Captain Ramos racked up 180 international caps to score 23 goals for Spain.
