Ukraine ends 2021-22 Premier League season, names no champion due to war

Shakhtar Donetsk had 47 points in 18 matches to be leaders when Ukrainian football league was suspended

ANKARA (AA) - The 2021-22 top-tier football season in Ukraine was terminated without naming the champion due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Ukrainian Premier League said in a statement that the clubs proposed to end this season early, as the league "cannot be completed due to the extension of martial law status in Ukraine."

"The standings as of February 24, 2022 will be the final standings of the 2021/22 season, with no winners to be awarded," it added.

Shakhtar Donetsk were the leaders with 47 points in 18 matches, and their nearest opponents Dynamo Kyiv were two points behind them.

The league went on a winter break after round 18 in December, but the war disrupted the 2021-22 football season.

At least 2,787 civilians have been killed and 3,152 others injured in Ukraine since the war started on Feb. 24, according to UN estimates. The true toll is feared to be much higher.

So far, 7.7 million people in Ukraine have been internally displaced, with more than 5.3 million fleeing to other countries, according to the UN refugee agency.
