GAZA, Palestine (AA) – The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees announced Tuesday that it has paid financial compensation to 189 families in the Gaza Strip this week.
"The amount of compensation is $2.2 million distributed for 189 Palestinian families to rebuild their homes, completely demolished during the recent 2014 war," Adnan Abu Hasna, spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), said in a statement.
"The total number of families who have received payments from UNRWA to rebuild their homes [since 2014] is 1,288," he said, adding that 201 families had been able to return to their homes after they were completely rebuilt.
Israel launched a military operation against the Gaza Strip in July 2014 that killed more than 2,000 Palestinians and injured another 11,000, according the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Around 28,366 homes were also damaged in the war, according to official statistics.
