Over 2,316 killed, 13,293 injured by powerful quakes in southern Türkiye

ANKARA (AA) - Sports organizations, leagues, clubs, and players sent messages of sympathy to Türkiye on Monday after strong earthquakes hit the country's southern region, leaving at least 2,316 dead and 13,293 injured.

European football's governing body UEFA and EuroLeague Basketball shared expressed their condolences on Twitter.

"The thoughts of UEFA and the European football community are with the people of Türkiye and Syria, and all those affected by this morning's devastating earthquake," UEFA tweeted.

EuroLeague offered its condolences over the loss of lives in the quakes, saying: "Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the recent earthquake in Türkiye."

Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga, and French Ligue 1 also offered their condolences from their respective Twitter accounts.

Real Madrid and Barcelona condoled with the families of those killed in the earthquakes.

"Real Madrid C. F., the club's president and its Board of Directors would like to share their deepest sympathy and solidarity for the earthquake that has struck Turkey and Syria in the last few hours," Real Madrid said.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric also posted prayer emoji for Türkiye and Syria on Twitter.

Also on Twitter, Barcelona expressed "its condolences to the family members and friends of all those who have lost their lives in the earthquake in Turkey and Syria and wishes a healthy recovery to all of the injured and those affected."

German powerhouse Bayern Munich separately tweeted: "FC Bayern Munich's thoughts are with the victims of the earthquake disaster and their families."

French club Paris Saint-Germain condoled with the Turkish people as well.

"Following the severe earthquake that occurred overnight in Kahramanmaras that has caused a number of deaths, Paris Saint-Germain would like to show its support for the people of Turkey, as well as all the players, coaches and staff in the Red-and-Blue family and their loved ones," PSG said on Twitter.

The team's Spanish defender Sergio Ramos also offered his condolences separately. "All my love to Türkiye, Syria. Our thoughts are with you," tweeted Ramos.

English Premier League side Liverpool offered their condolences via Twitter, writing: "Our thoughts are with all those who are affected by the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria."

Liverpool's Egyptian star Mohamed Salah also shared a message of condolence: "Terrible news coming out of Syria and Turkey. My condolences for the lives lost and I wish all those injured a full recovery."

The Premier League's reigning champions Manchester City, meawhile, said: "The thoughts of everyone at Manchester City are with the people of Turkey, Syria and Lebanon affected by the devastating earthquakes."

International Automobile Federation (FIA) President Mohammed Ben Sulayem tweeted: "Our thoughts are with the victims of the terrible earthquake in Turkey and Syria, with their families and all our friends in the region. Our hearts go out to them."

Earlier, the Turkish Football Federation had extended its sympathy after the deadly earthquakes.

Türkiye's Youth and Sports Minister Mehmet Kasapoglu said all national sports organizations in the country were suspended until further notice.

At least 2,316 people were killed and 13,293 others injured in 10 provinces due to two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye on Monday, said an official from the country's disaster agency.

Early Monday morning, a strong 7.7 earthquake, centered in the Pazarcik district, jolted Kahramanmaras and strongly shook several provinces, including Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay, and Kilis.

Later, at 13.24 p.m. (1024GMT), a 7.6 magnitude quake centered in Kahramanmaras’s Elbistan district struck the region.
