US eliminates Women’s World Cup hosts France

ANKARA (AA) – The U.S. qualified for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup semifinals Friday, beating the tournament's host nation France 2-1.

U.S. forward Megan Rapinoe scored two goals at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Having led the game 2-0, Team USA conceded a goal by French center back Wendie Renard in the 81st minute.

Renard's late header kept France’s hopes alive, but the U.S. secured a 2-1 lead, ending Les Bleues’ World Cup journey.

Rapinoe was named player of the match as her goals were enough to eliminate France.

"We'd have loved to play nicer, but we now have England and we move on. This is so special to beat the host nation in the Parc des Princes; you can't ask for any more than this," Rapinoe said after her team’s victory.

The U.S. will face England on July 2 in a semifinal showdown in Lyon.
