US Senate holds hearing for Trump's pick as next Air Force Chief of Staff

'If confirmed, I pledge to give my all to successfully fulfill the duties of the office on behalf of the American people,' says Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US Senate Armed Services Committee convened Thursday to hear testimony from Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, who was nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as the 24th Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

"I recognize the enormous responsibility that comes with this position, especially in the global security environment. If confirmed, I pledge to give my all to successfully fulfill the duties of the office on behalf of the American people," Wilsbach told the committee during his opening statement.

If approved by the Senate, Wilsbach, the former head of Air Combat Command, would succeed Gen. David Allvin as Air Force chief of staff.

Allvin, who has held the position for nearly two years, announced his unexpected decision to retire this fall—an uncommon move, as chiefs of staff traditionally serve four-year terms.

Wilsbach said the nation relies on the Air Force to provide nuclear and conventional air superiority, global strike, rapid mobility, command and control, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.

"These are no-fail missions. They are critical to our national security, particularly in an increasingly dangerous world," he added.

If confirmed, the general said he sees two priorities as central to ensuring that strength: readiness and modernization.
