Zimbabwe’s opposition leader leaves party he founded in 2022
Nelson Chamisa promises to never surrender in fight for change
By Jeffrey Moyo
HARARE, Zimbabwe- (AA) - Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader Nelson Chamisa announced Thursday that he has left the Citizens Coalition for Change party he formed in 2022.
“Fellow citizens, this is to officially, and under my hand, inform you, that, with immediate effect, I no longer have anything to do with CCC. My focus remains fully on Zimbabwe, asserting your victory, honoring the citizens mandate and God’s calling to provide leadership,” Chamisa wrote on X.
“There are fresh things we need to do. Let’s all work together for total freedom, true change and wholistic transformation for our beloved country. Giving up or giving in is not an option,” he added.
It is unclear whether he would form another party.
Chamisa’s announcement comes months after his party’s self-appointed Secretary-General Sengezo Tshabangu withdrew the opposition’s elected members from parliament and councilors at will.
