Novak Djokovic, the Serbian top seed in men's tennis, on Thursday said he underwent knee surgery after withdrawing from the 2024 French Open (Roland Garros).
"In the past day, I had to make some tough decisions after sustaining a meniscus tear during my last match. I'm still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well," Djokovic said on Instagram, and adding that he will do his best to return "healthy and fit" to the courts soon.
Djokovic, 37, who won 24 Grand Slam titles in singles, was injured in a fourth-round match against Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo on Monday but the Serbian superstar won the five-set match in Paris.
Norwegian seventh seed Casper Ruud received a walkover into the French Open semifinals following Djokovic's withdrawal.
On Friday, Ruud will take on German fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the semis. The men's final will be held on Sunday.
Djokovic is expected to miss this summer's Wimbledon which will be held on July 1-14 in the UK. His Paris Olympics quest appeared to be in doubt after his knee injury.
The 2024 Olympics in the French capital will begin a couple of weeks after the Wimbledon.
